Danzer’s veneer mill in Edinburgh, Indiana lies in the heart of one of the most valuable forest areas in the world. Known for its high-quality Walnut and White Oak, the area attracted many hardwood companies in the past and was dubbed the veneer capital of the world. Today Danzer is the largest employer in Edinburgh with approximately 200 dedicated employees. Danzer acquired one of those early Edinburgh veneer companies—David R. Webb, established in 1894—almost 50 years ago. Since then we have continuously improved the site and grown the business: The facility now runs four proprietary best-in-class Danzer VS4000 slicers and one Danzer RSL4000 staylog peeling lathe, and is the location of our innovative hardwood log scanner. The latest technology and our well-trained team of professionals ensure a consistently high-quality product for our customers, and responsible use of hardwood resources.
Strategically located just outside Pittsburgh, Darlington, Pennsylvania is the site of Danzer’s central clipping, grading and sorting facility for our North American veneer production. Aggregating one inventory at one location makes it easier for customers to find exactly what they need—and establishes us as the preferred source of veneer in the industry. Our automated grading lines work with at least a “four eye principle,” normally with 3 people at grading and sorting to ensure consistent product quality. In addition, the location’s accessibility allows for exceptional delivery service and speed. Established in Darlington in 1992 and acquired by Danzer in 1997, Danzer employs approximately 140 people here, including veneer sales, logistics and production staff. Darlington is also home to Danzer’s North American finance, IT and engineering teams.
The company’s largest facility—Danzer Bohemia Dyharna—is based in the Czech Republic. This veneer production site is among the most technologically advanced in the industry. Equipped with state-of-the-art machines including several Danzer VS4000 slicers and special kiln dryers for thick-cut veneers, the plant produces products ranging from standard veneers to rare burls; from sliced flooring lamellas to technical veneers (Danzer Vinterio and Linea); from individual customer requests to high-volume components. Established in 2001, this Danzer location employs more than 500 production and sales professionals. The Danzer site in Kesselsdorf, near Dresden, Germany, is the center of Danzer innovation. As the birthplace of 3D-Veneer, the facility is known globally for the ability to produce astonishing products with wood not previously thought possible, including custom solutions for the automotive and furniture industries. Our customers refer to our team in Kesselsdorf as the “magicians in the wood industry.” There are approximately 65 employees involved in development and 3D-Veneer production at the Kesselsdorf location, founded in 2001. In addition to the Danzer Specialty Division, this site also houses Danzer Europe’s engineering and IT teams.
This veneer processing plant in the north of the Czech Republic produces spliced faces for furniture, doors, panels and edge banding, and is also specialized in splicing thick-cut veneers for flooring or other applications. All products are customer-specific. Built in 1994 and employing approximately 70 people, the site is known for its flexible production capabilities, with the ability to serve customers with small, specialized needs as well as large, industrial purchasers needing high volumes of spliced faces. This veneer processing plant in Canada produces spliced veneers for all sizes of doors and panels. The facility was founded in 1958 and has a worldwide reputation for highest manufacturing standards as well as being reliable, professional and trustworthy. More than 30 people work here, many with tenures of 20-plus years. We are known for our flexible production capabilities, with the ability to serve customers with small, specialized needs as well as large, industrial purchasers needing high volumes. All customers benefit from this facility’s commitment to service, short turnaround times and dedication to delivering consistent and high-quality products.
Williamsport, Pennsylvania is one of Danzer’s veneer slicing operations, with a total of six direct-feed veneer lines that include five vertical slicers; two Danzer VS4000 slicers with Babcock dryers; three Cremona slicers with Cremona dryers; and one Cremona half-round with a Babcock dryer. Considered a “veneer pioneer,” this plant was the first to use direct infeed for drying—moving the wood from the slicer to the dryer automatically without hand-feeding. Williamport’s core species include Red Oak, Maple, Cherry, White Ash, White Oak, Poplar, Hickory and Birch; and veneers ranging from commodity to premium. The Williamsport facility was founded in 1984 and is one of the largest veneer mills in terms of total machine capability in the USA. Our 100 employees generate more products per employee than any other veneer plant in the country.
Located in the heart of the best European Oak region, the Souvans veneer production facility has a long tradition of producing quality hardwood veneers. In addition to Oak and Knotty Oak, the plant also processes Ash, Beech and other species. Upcoming large investments in thick-cut capacities will convert the site in a highly efficient plant for hardwood flooring deck layers. Founded in 1966, the site was acquired by Danzer in 1997. Using highly innovative technology, this location is focused on optimizing production resources—from the raw material to the productivity of the 67 team members. The automation assures efficiency—and exceptional customer value.
Danzer’s hardwood sawmill is located close to the source of premium North American hardwoods, including Black Cherry, Soft Maple and Hard Maple, in Bradford, Pennsylvania. By focusing on a small procurement radius, Danzer is able to provide customers with unparalleled consistency of color and quality. Our Bradford plant provides customer-specific grading and sorting to further assure products meet customer needs. One of the 10 largest sawmills in the U.S., the Bradford lumber facility opened in 1988 and now employs 160 people. Danzer has implemented a highly ergonomic way of grading lumber, allowing the grader to focus on the board in a well-lit, user-friendly environment to ensure consistent grading results. We’ve also put advanced technology in place: Our curve sawing technology results in far more efficient use of wood.
Danzer’s Shade Gap facility buys green lumber and then homogenously dries it—without breakage or rips. Customers appreciate the exceptional quality of our dry kiln processes, as well as that fact that our concentration yard is located close to the source, giving us a logistics advantage that allows us to move orders quickly. Founded in 1987, Shade Gap’s 40 employees have the ability to dry all American hardwood species with 4/4 through 12/4 thickness. Our specialization is drying Oak, White Oak and Maple lumber with thicknesses of 6/4 plus, a challenge many other sawmills avoid. Our focus on species variety and extensive experience working with thick wood makes Danzer the preferred provider for dried thick lumber.
